What We Do

Evening Legal Clinics

A volunteer lawyer will meet with you to discuss your legal issue, outline steps you can take to help resolve the issue on your own, help you to fill out documents, and refer you to any applicable legal and community organizations.

The evening clinics take place:
   - every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening at our downtown office;
   - the second Thursday of each month at Abbottsfield Mall;

- the second and fourth Friday of each month over the lunch hour at the Seniors’ Association of Greater Edmonton (SAGE); and
   - the last Saturday each month at ASSIST Community Services
.

All evening clinics are by appointment only. To see if you qualify for assistance and to book an appointment, call the ECLC at 780-702-1725.

Legal Advice and Representation

The staff lawyers at the ECLC review all information gathered at clinic to determine whether they are able to provide further legal assistance if it is required. The ECLC can assist with legal representation in Provincial Court and the Court of Queens Bench, and in hearings and appeals before administrative boards and tribunals.

We are unable to assist everyone; however, we will do our best to assist when:
   - you would greatly benefit from our legal representation or further assistance;
   - your case has legal merit;
   - we have the legal skills and resources necessary to assist you;
   - you meet our income guidelines; and
   - there are no other legal services available to assist you.

If the ECLC is able represent you in your legal matter, there is a $20 file opening fee associated with this service.

Outreach Services and Income Support Advocacy

The ECLC may be able to assist clients with civil legal problems through referrals to community service agencies and emergency housing. We can also assist in the appeal process for the following income security benefit programs:
   - Support for Independence (SFI);
   - Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH);
   - Employment Insurance (EI);
   - Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and CPP Disability; and
   - Old Age Security (OAS).

Foreign Worker Program

The ECLC can assist foreign workers with legal information, outreach services and legal advice on immigration law. Currently, our focus is to address questions about work permits and legal status.

Waiver Program

The ECLC administers a waiver program, which reduces the cost to file at Provincial Court from $100 to $25, and at the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS) from $75 to $0. For more information on how to obtain a waiver, contact the ECLC at 780-702-1725.
Any information you share with the staff or volunteers at the ECLC is completely confidential.
